Backend Integration

Both web and desktop applications are linked into a wide variety of backend systems in most solutions today. This transparency of backend systems, many legacy, continues as self service and eCommerce growth accelerate.

Some backend systems run on different platforms, creating cross platform challenges. Some links need real time connections while others work fine with less than real time updates.

Things Bayleaf believes are key to successful backend integration for both Web and Desktop solutions:

  • Distinguish between the need for real time and less than real time access;
  • Carefully choose the right access technologies, techniques, and designs;
  • Consider using web services or xml based interfaces for cross platform access, both real time and batch;
  • Set performance targets for each link to backend systems in the design stage;
  • Benchmark performance of each link to a backend system well before the application goes live; and
  • Consider altering or adding to the backend systems as a possible element of the solution.
